Frequently Asked Questions

While the recruitment process may seem lengthy and uncalled for, it is important and effective in the fact that it gives potential new members the opportunity to meet every chapter. Not only does this give chapters a fair shot at recruitment, but it also gives the potential new member the ability to find their home.

How much time does recruitment take?

Simple answer: as much as you want it to take. All of our chapters are willing to work around your schedule and are never going to put you in a situation where you have choose between the fraternity and something else that is important to you. Some of our members dedicate several hours a week to the fraternity while others find themselves more involved in other organizations! In short, you’re going to get out what you put in.

Aren’t I just buying my friends though?

No, this stereotype is entirely false. You are not buying your friends. Almost every organization or club at BG is going to have some form of fees that go to covering operating costs. However, very few of these offer as much as a fraternity. Therefore, it only makes sense that our dues are slightly higher. Additionally, paying your dues doesn’t make you a member of your fraternity. It is the experiences, memories and bonds you form that make you a member.

What about the costs?

Each fraternity member is required to pay dues each semester to their respective fraternity. While amounts are different for every chapter, they generally pay for similar things such as insurance, IFC dues, headquarters dues, social fees, etc. However, no fraternities require dues to be paid after you graduate. Thus, you are essentially paying four years for a lifetime of membership! Additionally, many of our chapters are flexible in how you pay and payment plans are very common.

Am I going to be hazed?

Hazing is a criminal act in the State of Ohio, punishable by jail time. Hazing is inconsistent with the values of all IFC fraternities, and the act of hazing has no place within a fraternity community. Fraternities strive to build confidence and courage by offering opportunities for men to learn on their own what it takes to be a man. Additionally, the University and all members of fraternities have a strict, zero tolerance policy on hazing. Any and all allegations of hazing are investigated and can remain anonymous

I'm interested! Now what?

First, Register! All men going through recruitment at any time of the year must register. Registering is easy though! If you haven’ t done so already, simply go to: www.bgsufraternitylife.com and sign up for recruitment. You will then be required to attend one of the interest sessions in order to understand the process of recruitment, BG’s Fraternity life and what becoming a member of the IFC community is all about. Registering in no way obligates you to join a fraternity. Rather, it simply makes you eligible for the bidding process and also allows our fraternities the opportunity to connect with you on an individual basis. We highly encourage each potential new member to research BGSU’s fraternity chapters by visiting their chapter websites, Facebook groups, and (inter)national organization websites.
